4 Things for a Safe Run!

Feb 14, 2017

A safe runner is a happy runner and we all want to be happy, right?

Before you head out for your next walk or run, make sure you will be safe! There are 4 things I have with me for every run to help keep me safe and I wanted to share them with you, so that you'll be safe, too!

1. Wear your brights! Whether it's a light or a bright color shirt, make sure that you can be seen. Remember, just because you can see a car, doesn't mean the driver can see you. Make every effort for them to see you from a distance.

There is a good reason running clothes are made in bright, crazy colors and this is it.

Notice, the next time you are driving and see someone out walking or running. If they aren't wearing a bright color, it is easy to miss them. Do NOT be missed! Make people notice you and stay safe out there!

2. Bring your phone. Don't bring it to talk on it, bring it so that you have a way to call for help, if needed. Let someone know where you are by using the Road ID app. It is free and will alert someone of your route, starting/ending time and if you pause for too long.

3. Take your water bottle. For a run longer than about 3 miles, I carry my water with me, even on a route where there are water fountains because you never know when you'll need to hydrate.  When we started requiring our participants to carry their water bottles, the incidences of dehydration issues decreased dramatically.  It's always better to be safe, than sorry. Carry your water and avoid heat and hydration related illnesses

4. Run defensively and be prepared. None of us likes to think about the possibility of being a victim, but the threat is there and we need to be prepared. You can pick up an easy to carry pepper spray/mace device at your local running store or discount store. If you run alone, it is good defense against someone who means harm or an unfriendly animal.

Being prepared is your best step in staying safe out on the roads and trails. Take your safety seriously and you will be fine. Being aware and proactive is important. When you employ these 4 things and make them part of your routine, they will go a long way in keeping you a safe and happy runner!

Now get out there and get your miles in!

Running happy,

Robin
